Finding the ideal freelance business to start is a lot like shopping in a candy store. It can be fun but overwhelming at the same time—a sensory overload.

There’s so many questions. Everything looks so good, which one do I choose? What if I don’t like my choice? What if I pick the wrong one?

Trying to answer all those questions at once will only lead to paralysis. In order to help you narrow down your business choices—and lower your stress—I’ve come up with three questions.

Why do you want to freelance?

Maybe this question is self evident but you might be surprised if you stop and think about it.

Understanding why you want to freelance in the first place can help you nail down goals, envision your future, and overcome obstacles. If your “why” isn’t strong enough, you won’t make it happen.

Your reasons for freelancing create the roots from which the rest of your business will grow.

What do you love to do?

When you first start your business search, you’ll be tempted to focus on ideas that will  make the most money. That’s why there’s so many Internet marketing scams—they all push the money button.

You have to be able to think in a vacuum for a moment. What is it that makes you tick? If you want to write, then write. If you want to design Websites, then design.

Chasing fads for money’s sake will only lead you to disappointment and debt.

Are you willing to give up?

You’ll have to eventually decide on the business that fits you best…then go for it. You’ll second guess yourself. You’ll think you made the wrong decision.

The hardest part about starting a business will be letting go of every other idea you have. But, in reality, by focusing on one idea, you’ll give yourself the freedom you need to move forward.
