Be a Freelance Business Plan Writer

Date January 25, 2008

If you’ve spent anytime looking at different business ideas, you’ve probably come across business plan writing as a possible freelance alternative.

As a business plan writer, you’re helping a business design a road map with a focus on marketing, accounting, and strategic planning.

This is a business that is much more involved than simply plugging in words and numbers and spitting out a nice looking piece of paper.

You need to have the communications skills to be able to see your client’s business perspective.

While there are several, high powered business plan software applications on the market, your clients will pay you to develop a plan tailored to their unique circumstances and market conditions.

You must develop the skills to sift through company financial data, organize a future plan, and present a superior end product.

Who will be your target market?

New businesses are your obvious first target. But, what about established businesses looking for expansion funding? Another niche market would be businesses who are looking for help on how to expand—or get started—online.

In fact, many companies don’t understand the complexities of successfully porting their businesses online.

How much will you make?

Business plan writing has a lot of potential and can be very lucrative as you become more established.

Working for a startup, you can expect to get $2,000 on the low end and $7,000+ on the high end. As an established business plan writer, you can charge $25,000 or more for your services.

As an alternative payment arrangement, some planners charge a smaller, nominal fee with a guaranteed percentage of the funding that is obtained by the client.
