If you’re familiar with the constantly changing job market—and understand what it takes to get hired—you can try the lucrative field of resume writing.

Any freelance writer can add resume writing as a skill set. There will always be a market for job seekers and career changers.

Marketing freelance resume writing services is easier if you live near larger metropolitan areas with colleges and vocational institutions. But, you’re not limited to your local area if you can market smart online.

Selling Resume Writing Services

What do resume writing and lawyers have in common? Both cost money. Both are useful resources. But, people often feel they can do without them, relying instead on the Internet and other resources.

That will be your first task, to educate your potential clients on the value of putting together a professionally written and prepared resume.

Another selling point is that the cost of having a resume written is small compared to the job a client could land as a result of your writing services. Most professional, entry-level jobs start in the twenty thousand dollar range. Shelling out a few hundred bucks for a  well written resume is a very small price to pay.

What’s the best way to promote your resume writing services? Post flyers with tear off edges at libraries, student unions, placement offices, and restaurants. Another effective promotion method is to give free talks on how to write a good resume.

I don’t recommend advertising in the local paper because costs can be very high. You might, though, want to try free weeklies.

How Much can you Make?

For entry-level professional positions, charge a minimum of $100 for a one-page resume. If you have standard templates, it should take you an hour to interview your client and an hour to write the resume giving you ~ $45 per hour. Charge at least $50 to $75 more for a cover letter.

For young professionals with 5 to 10 years of experience, charge a minimum of $200 plus the additional cost of a cover letter.

For management positions (CEO, CFO, CTO, or higher middle management), charge a minimum of $300.

When you first start writing resumes, you may only be able to finish one or two per day. If you send clients a standard form for data collection, you can cut out interview time and increase your daily output to four or more resumes.

Once you get proficient, you should be able to complete up to five resumes a day. Based on the rates above, during busy periods, you should be able to pull in $400 or more per day.

Generating Additional Income

Cover letters are becoming a standard resume add-on. The great thing about writing cover letters is that your client will need a different cover letter to send to each prospective employer.

Instead of charging additional for a cover letter, package it as a “premium” resume service. Most professionals understand they will need a cover letter for their resume.

Another add-on is helping job hunters weave through the online job application process. Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com are the Web’s two largest job banks. Become an expert in these two site’s application processes and you can set yourself up as an online job consultant.
