As a freelance letter writer, you’ll prepare letters for individuals, businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

You might be responsible for actually coming up with the words yourself or formatting someone else’s words into thank you notes, invitations, business notices, or any other reason.

So, why would someone hire a letter writer? Maybe an individual would like to dispute a credit card charge. Or, someone would like to respond to a government official in a concise and tactful way. Believe it or not, writing doesn’t come naturally to most people.

It takes skill to put to paper the right words for different situations. This is very similar to ghostwriting but on a smaller scale. You have to be able to get inside someone’s personality and use the words they would normally use.

The advantages to writing a letter (as opposed to calling or emailing) is that you have the ability to carefully hone your message to make it as clear and unambiguous as possible and the advantage of having an official record of your correspondence.

Your clients will include anyone who needs a well written letter—from the young and inexperienced to busy professionals, business owners, CEOs, and students applying to colleges.

You should be well versed in a word processing application—most likely Microsoft Word—as well as have the ability to output letters into PDF and other compatible formats.

You’ll need to invest in books on letter writing and formatting. Place flyers and ads in community newspapers, schools, colleges, and senior centers. What’s the best way to get clients? Offer a class or seminar on writing effective letters.

You’ll also need to setup a Website with examples and a contact/order form. You’ll be able to conduct your business by Website, phone, email, and instant messaging.

Charge a flat rate based on the type of letter you’re asked to write. For multi-page letters, you might have to charge a base fee plus an hourly rate based on the letter’s length. Include 1 to 2 revisions in your base price with an additional fee for more changes.

Consider add-on services such as envelop addressing and mailing.
