Welcome to another freelance roundup Monday. A lot of my ideas are based on personal experiences with writing and Web design.

Today I’m concentrating on art and graphic design related businesses. If you have experience in either area, now’s the time to get started. If you don’t have experience but want to get into art/graphic design, there’s still plenty of opportunity.

Below I’ve listed 7 Freelance Art and Design Business Ideas. Use them as jumping points for further research.

1. Custom Airbrushing

What does an airbrush artist do? Customize cars, Paint storefronts, or create murals for cities. Airbrush equipment is fairly inexpensive—due to online suppliers.

Typical hourly rates are in the $60/hour range. Airbrush work is time intensive so you’ll need to make sure you have work lined up after each project.

2. Artist Agent

If you love art but don’t have artistic talent, starting a freelance artistic agency can be a fun opportunity. An artist agent is just like any other agent, you represent the work of other independent artists or groups.

You’re compensated based on a percentage of the selling value of each piece. You’ll need to be well versed in art to be successful. This can be a lucrative opportunity if you can reach metropolitan markets.

3. Book Illustrator

As a book illustrator, you’ll work with book publishers, literary agents, and individual authors providing illustration services. There are several different niches you can choose to specialize in—children, medical, scientific, and engineering to name a few.

You’ll either be paid a one time fee, a fee plus a percent of royalties, or straight royalties.

4. Logo Design

Every startup needs business cards, brochures, and letterhead—with a nice logo prominently displayed. All you need is design software and a creative spirit.

You can start part-time, working the freelance job sites to get experience. Explore other logo designers to research pricing and design samples.

5. Business Presentations

When a business owner needs financing, they not only need a well-written business plan, they also need a business presentation.

As a business presentation service provider, you’ll pull out important points in a business plan and put them into a coherent, well designed presentation.

As the business world continues to become more niche focused, starting a business presentation service can be a lucrative decision.

Obtaining the best online MBA is one method to spur your business ideas too.

6. Marketing Collateral

Putting together brochures, letterhead, and other marketing materials is a combination of business, marketing, and design.

Your job will be to convince business owners to let you do the design and layout of their marketing materials.

The proliferation of design software has only increased the demand for competent designers. If you have a knack for getting a message across in a small space, this business could be for you.

7. Catalog Layout Design

Despite the “paperless” society that we’re living in, I still manage to get 2 or more catalogs in my mailbox each week. Catalogs obviously work as a marketing vehicle.

This is the perfect business for anyone who enjoys looking at catalogs and can appreciate good design. You will need to have decent layout skills as most of your work will be completed in a desktop publishing type program.

You may need to contract with writers and photographers to bring together a solid team for final publication.
