Ah, the mystery of search engine optimization. If it weren’t for the popularity of the big search engines, we might not know—or care to know—how important search traffic is for the survival of a Website.

Search engine optimization isn’t any one skill. It’s the package of many skills Webmasters use to best position Web pages higher in search results. Higher results equate to more traffic which, hopefully, equates to more sales. The only mystery to this process is that nobody really knows what makes for perfect optimization.

Yes, we can get close, but not exact. And that’s where you come in as an SEO consultant—to demystify the process, helping clients get more traffic and more sales.

Breaking into SEO takes skill, hard work, and luck. Unfortunately, the hardest part may be convincing clients that it takes time to see results. Consistent (constant) education and communication wikk make sure clients don’t lose faith. And to make sure they’re getting their money’s worth.

Skills needed

You’ll need to understand keywords, keyword research, the signifcance of anchor text, and one way links. My recommend resources for learning these skills…

Services to offer

SEO is wide open in terms of service offerings. I see content creation as becoming increasingly important because that’s what search engines want—quality links gained (earned) with quality content.

Other services include link building, keyword analysis, blogging, re-designs, content re-writes, forum posting, and blog commenting.

Pricing

Pricing can be tricky. Links can range from a few pennies to hundreds of dollars each. Content creation prices range from a few dollars per page to hundreds of dollars per article. Look at other SEO company Websites. If someone’s already doing it, the easiest way to get started is to model someone else.

Competing successfully

If I were starting over in the SEO field, I would carve out a niche in my local area first. Once established locally, it’s easier to get a footing in the global marketplace. It’s important to gain confidence when first starting out.

Focus on building relationships and learning how to advise and guide clients through the often times confusing search engine algorithms, updates, and nonsense.

Once you step into the worldwide/nationwide marketplace, get above the competition. Don’t lower your prices. Don’t try to compete with every little guy out there. You want to be able to raise your prices, not lower them.

A successful SEO consultant must be willing to keep up with the ever changing search engine updates and have rock solid patience with clients. If you’re up to the task, there’s plenty of room at the top.
