As a freelancer, one important task you may want to accomplish before you officially get started is to focus on an industry you can service for as long as possible.

Because of the Internet, hundreds of fads are born and die each year. It would be a disadvantage to hitch your freelance wagon to a fast-burner, only to watch it flame out and have to start all over again the next year.

Over the last 7 to 8 years, I’ve noticed that some industries manage to hang around and evolve with rapid technology changes.

Based on my own observations, the following is a list of five areas I believe have the staying, and future growth, power that a freelancer could serve for years to come.

1. Self Help: Fueled by recent bestselling books, people are wanting to improve their lives in every aspect. Potential freelance business ideas include: family therapist, time management consultant, and personal development coach.

2. Business/Career/Moneymaking: I’m boggled by the number of people wanting to earn money online. I’m also amazed at freelancers who are starting niche businesses to meet this insatiable demand. Freelance ideas? Custom blog designer, college application consultant, and Internet business plan writer.

3. Health and Wellness: This industry is huge! From diets to niche disease support groups, the Web has created health niches within niches. Freelance businesses you can start: personal trainer, custom menu/grocery shopping developer, and weight loss coach.

4. Skills Training: As formal education is diffused, individual training/teaching has fast become a hot marketplace. Individualization and customization are key. You can be a freelance math tutor, carpentry trainer, or computer programming coach.

5. Travel & Entertainment: Disposable income, especially within the baby boomer population, is becoming more abundant. And so are the desires of this generation to travel and “live it up”. Possible freelance ideas include: travel consulting, personal concierge services, and family vacation planning.

The great thing about consumers and businesses in these industries is that they can be served entirely through electronic channels (i.e. the Internet). Brainstorm your own ideas and see if anyone else is doing it. Have fun!

Amen. Also, don’t forget business writing. If you learn an industry, even enough to use a bit of the jargon, you’ll not lack for work. I specialize in insurance and risk management writing. It opens a lot of doors to new work because very few people understand the industry.

Thanks for the comments, Lori. I can imagine there’s very few expert insurance and risk management writers. I’m guessing you worked in the insurance business somehow before you started writing?
