Freelance success, like most things in life, has less to do with talent and more to do with attitude. If you’ve been a pessimist most of your life, take heart. You can learn how to change your attitude by following these 4 simple success rules.

Rule # 1: Turn Your Doubts and Anger to Motivation

You’ll set yourself apart from 95% of all the other business owners out there if you resolve to stay the course, no matter what your emotional state. There will be times when feelings of doubt, guilt, and unhappiness will threaten to paralyze you.

As Dori says in the movie Finding Nemo “just keep swimming.” Write down the number one reason why you decided to start your freelance business. Whenever you feel like quitting, read your number one reason over and over again.

Rule # 2: Don’t be too realistic

The realist tells you that it’s impossible to make a living working at home. The realist tells you that 4 out 5 of all small businesses started each year fail. Forget those statistics.

The power of a positive mental attitude will far outweigh any natural talent. If you make it a goal to be successful, you will be successful.

Rule #3: It’s always too early to quit

Taking the first step is always the hardest. More often than not you’ll want to quit. Part of reaching the goal is making the journey.

Realize that when you first start, you have nothing. Too often we want success as fast as we can microwave popcorn—3 minutes max.

Success comes to those who stick with it; day in and day out; year in and year out. When you feel like quitting, remind yourself that it’s too early to quit.

Rule #4: Practice persistence. Learn Optimism

The only way to learn optimism is to practice persistence. The longer you push through the low times, the more confidence you will gain.

The more confidence you gain, the more optimistic you will be. It all begins with the will and resolve to start and keep going no matter what obstacles pop up.

This is great info. Success doesn’t mean having a multi-national company in 4 months since it’s impossible. It means earning enough to see a future. We need to minimize our expenses and focus on growing that small business. In my case I am glad I do have clients and they pay me. I was able to be on a small profit since day one (but this is not the case all the time). Some business types take months or 2-3 years to be on a profit, but as long as you are growing, there is hope.

Having huge expectations is not a good idea since a business is not a fairy tale. It’s hard work and dedication, but most of the times once you put passion and effort into it IT WILL WORK.

I agree. When you are into freelancing, just be confident with yourself. When I went into freelancing 8 years ago, it was not easy, but until now, I still thought that was a brave decision I made. Until now, I am enjoying my time working freelance. Its a great career path.
